ARTIST BIO:

Dorothy Spangler was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and currently lives in California. As a child she was inspired by a visit to a local artist’s studio and soon began painting on her own. She studied art in high school and majored in art at the College of San Mateo. She went on to study with Northern California artist William Ward and at Henry Hensche's Cape School of Art on Cape Cod. It was there that she began to experiment with the glazing techniques that lend her pieces their radiant and colorful qualities.

By thinning down her oils with glaze, she applies color in layers, giving her work the lightness and spontaneity of watercolors, but with the added depth and expression of oils. Finishing touches are applied with a palette knife.

She has found inspiration for her work in locations throughout Europe–particularly France, Spain and Italy–as well as her own locale of the San Francisco and Monterey Bay areas. Open flower markets, romantic Parisian cafes, quaint street scenes and Venetian canals are typical of the scenes depicted in her oil paintings.

Spangler has been selling her paintings for the past thirty years, and in that time has proven to be very popular with collectors. Her work has been shown throughout the U.S. and Europe, including Union Square Galleries in San Francisco. She has had many successful one-woman shows and is listed in the archives of the National Museum of Women in the Arts, in Washington, D.C.
