Item Details
Description
Renaissance to 17C 18C Carved Chest, Bridal, dowery, royalty, captains, document, etc, iron heart hardware and lock hasp, crest or coat of arms with figural bird, people, bear, fox, etc., box overall measures 15.5 x 26 x 16.125 inches, medium hardwood such as oak. Note elaborate costumed figure to interior lid. See condition report. Provenance: This is one of 34 lots that come from a second estate in the auction with Vanderbilt ties, the private collection of a New York interior designer, name withheld, who lived in the James Macnamee Clara Vanderbilt House that later became the George Vanderbilt House on Grymes Hill in Stapleton Heights on Staten Island before retiring to the Florida Gulf Coast. Her room settings were featured in Better Homes and Gardens Decorating et al. Many of the artworks and antiques were acquired in Manhattan and much of the Outsider Art examples were obtained directly from the artists or as the original owner buying at exhibitions with the artist present. CX BGR 11
Condition
Structurally sound, has two old splines to interior back left and near left adjacent an absent till, at the lower center of the front panel are what appear to be possible drawer fronts however as can be seen in a detail image there is nothing behind the fronts which when looking at color lines in interior a few inches from bottom lead us to conclude this had a bottom drawer level at one time that was apparently removed resulting in a deeper interior, there also appear to be two square plugs in the lower front. A few chips to the interior lid carving, scattered separations and molding wear.
