Description
A mid to late 19th century violin made in the Tyrol region most likely northern Italy. It is constructed with a maple back, poplar ribs and scroll, and the top constructed from spruce. The front may be made of lacewood or sycamore. Scroll is original. Overall has an orange-brown varnish and appears to have been restored at one point in its history. It was disassembled for import from one European country to another (which was common practice to avoid taxes) therefore the neck is most likely not original. Includes modern bowstring. Carlo Antonio Testore label applied inside (not believed to be original to the instrument.) Provenance: from the estate of Walter Granato of Lausanne, Switzerland who played in the Lausanne Symphony Orchestra who purchased the violin as a very young man. Mr Granato was Italian, born in Ledinara in 1912 and became Swiss upon his marriage in 1947, passed down through descent to his daughter Silvia Melendez of Pooler, Georgia. The bridge is marked Maucotel Deschamp. Additional images available upon request. Sound clip available upon request.
Condition
Excellent condition and excellent sound with original parts - no cracks or signs or repairs. Violin may require new strings, fingerboard, retouching of varnish, etc. Violin was reviewed by Alfaro Violins of Decatur, GA.
