1883 FOLK ART PAPER SCHERENSCHNITTE KNIFE CUTTINGS BY GARRET SIMMONE

Item Details

Description

Knife-cut figures on white lined paper applied to black paper. Figures depict a bird with a branch in it’s beak and a rooster with a pencil notation beneath it reading “A. Biddy”. Manuscript white pencil notation on reverse reads; “Cut by Garret Simmons, August 1883”. The German language name for this art form is “Scherenschnitte” and they sometimes show up in areas historically occupied by German Americans. This example was found in Ohio. Quite uncommon to have the creator identified as in this example. Exterior dimensions of black sheet of paper are approximately 9” X 6”. Condition: light toning of white paper and light fading of black mount page…otherwise very good and ready to frame.
