Central Asia, Persia to India, Islamic or Mughal culture, ca. 17th to 19th century CE. A tall and intricately carved stone openwork panel known as a jali which translates to "net," with an interlocking latticework pattern, designed to lower the temperature in a building. Jalis were incorporated into architecture to allow ventilation while minimizing rain and heat in buildings before the widespread use of glass and electricity. The perforated stone patterns are modeled on geometric forms that were prevalent in Islamic tradition - the mesmerizing repeating star shapes represent the idea of infinity. The shadows cast from the openwork were striking additions to the interior space and jalis could be further embellished with semi-transparent stones or glass!
