Item Details
Description

Originally listed at $1,400...

Central Asia, Himalayan region, Tibet, ca. 19th to early 20th century CE. A dramatic nickel-silver mask of a Citipati skull, a skeletal protector deity in Himalayan Buddhism, the thick metal sheet is embossed and repousse molded to create depth and shadows across the gaunt visage. At the center of the forehead is a spiraling Urna or third eye that represents seeing beyond mortal suffering. Despite the intense and overall frightening appearance, the Citipati protect the Dharma (Buddhist teachings) from forces of dejection and ignorance. Pairs of Citipati (also known as Chitipati) represent lovers known as the Lord and Lady of the funeral pyre, whose sacred skeleton dance symbolizes the eternal dance of death as well as the arrival at absolute consciousness. Size: 9.5" W x 12" H (24.1 cm x 30.5 cm); 16" H (40.6 cm) on included custom stand.

Provenance: private New York, New York, USA collection; ex-private San Francisco, California, USA collection, 2000s
