Ludwig Bemelmans (1898â€â€œ1962) created the adventuresome, red-headed schoolgirl Madeline, an enduring figure in children's literature. The Austro-Hungarian-American writer and illustrator published more than 40 books during his lifetime. While many of his self-illustrated works were aimed at children, he also wrote contemplative novels for adults and sketched dozens of covers for New Yorker magazine.
