This piece was formerly in the Javal Collection, and bought from Anthony d'Offay (London) in October, 1967. While it is difficult to determine if sketches are by the hand of Hokusai himself or one of his students, this drawing compares very closely with published examples attributed to Hokusai.

Foxing, apparent area of creasing; not examined outside of frame.
