Description
A carved wooden female fetish with well handled surface patina and overall classic form and style. Known locally as a "Uden nyama" This fatting house doll was traditionally given to unmarried girls at time of entering the Ibibio fatting house by their Ebere Society sponsor. The doll would have been carried by the girl throughout her time there. Doll symbolizes the beautiful child which the girl will bear once she leaves the fatting house and is married. The doll is believed to promote fertility and is also used by diviners to bring fertility to barren women. Ibibio peoples, Nigeria, Africa. The sculpture measures 12.5 inches tall ( 13.5 inches on wooden base) Provenance: A Private New Jersey collection.
