WORLD WAR II SUDENTENLAND ELECTION LEAFLETS
Item Details
Description
A pair of original German World War II election ballots printed by the Sudetenland German Party (SdP), Czechoslovakia, 1p. 8vo. each, [n.d. but ca. 1938], in German. The first, printed on yellow stock, reads, in part: '…Gravediggers of Self-Government! The Christian Social Party and German Agrarian Party voted for administrative reform. German voters! Do not vote for parties who do not care about the preservation of our self-government!...'. Signed in text by Nazi politician and founder of the powerful SdP, Konrad Henlein. Together with a second German ballot, Troppau [Opava], [n.d.], titled 'To the Troppau Electorate! The German Social Democrats reply to the slanders raised by workers against the Henlein tradesman…Sunday, June 11 at 8 pm in Wolfsheim at a public electoral meeting…Anyone who wants to know how shamelessly the electorate is being lied to and deceived by the masterminds of so-called national community…should come!...'. Henlein was a key in crafting the political pre-conditions which would justify Hitler’s invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1938. The SdP was an admitted 'volkisch' party, but Henlein insisted he was loyal to Czechoslovakia. At the same time, he was secretly meeting with other countries to obtain Sudeten political and racial independence. This 'soft-power' tact culminated in March 1938, when he met with Hitler himself. Hitler agreed that Henlein would publicly make demands for Sudeten independence, seeing this move as a way to justify an invasion and start a localized war. Heinlein went on to announce a program for autonomy which made it seem that the Czech government stood in the way of his request, and crafted a clever public campaign that presented the Sudetenlanders as victims of Prague Castle. These leaflets demonstrate Heinlein’s scheme perfectly. Sudetenland was ceded to Nazi Germany as the result of the Munich Agreement which stated that it was to 'go home to the Reich'. Both in fine condition.
