Description
An M1917 'Doughboy' helmet from a member of the 77th Infantry Division, painted in green sawdust-textured paint, bearing at the front the regimental emblem of a golden Statue of Liberty standing before a blue four-sided panel. The paint has aged and has a slight white cast to it, lacking liner and chin strap. The 77th was the first American division composed of draftees to arrive in France. The division fought in the Battle of Chateau-Thierry and later in the Meuse–Argonne offensive. During its service in France, the 77th Division sustained 10,194 casualties: 1,486 killed and 8,708 wounded.
