Description
Rare, fine condition of a captain of the 1st U.S. Army Aero Squadron. The lightweight wool tunic in regulation Army green is closed with five brass buttons at the front, all regulation, as are the four scalloped pockets. The collars of the tunic bear original pin-back ‘U.S.’ and aviator pins. Shoulder epaulets bear buttons matching those on the tunic, as well as matching silvered pin-on captain’s bars. The left shoulder bears a 1st Army Aero Squadron patch, all hand-sewn to a brown wool backing which itself has been hand sewn to the sleeve. At the bottom of the left sleeve is a double-chevron insignia patch indicating the wearer spent one year overseas. The left breast shows a beautiful replica of a pilot’s badge in silver bullion, this too hand-sewn to the garment. A maker’s tag from ‘Dreyfuss & Son Dallas, Texas’ appears at the left of the fully-lined interior. On the inside of the right sleeve are handwritten markings ‘1625’ and ‘NAT’. Obvious stains at the armpits, indicating this was a well-worn tunic. The interior of the collar has also been stamped twice ‘W H H’., likely the owner’s initials. A very well-preserved tunic, in fine condition.
