A RARE LARGE FAMILLE ROSE CIRCULAR 'PHYSIOGNOMY' DISH
Qianlong period, circa 1740
An unusual and brightly enameled charger in opaque famille rose enamels with a central scene with two officials, each with an attendant, in conversation with a physiognomist, identified by the banner over his arm, the wide rim and cavetto are densely filled with multiple decorative borders.

The scene in the well of the dish depicts two officials in elaborate yellow and iron-red headdresses, each with an attendant behind holding a fan aloft. The officials are speaking with an older man in a blue enamel robe, over the sleeve of which is a paper with four characters shan guan qi se, which identifies the elder gentleman as a physiognomist, and above whom is a bat in flight, relating to good luck in the career of the official.
