Description
Carved from a dense heavy wood with classic facial features, raised scar designs, stylized coiffure and a deep well handled and worn surface patina showing years of field use. Such masks were danced as public entertainment known as Mblo. Mblo performances consist of a succession of dances that escalate in complexity and importance, culminating ultimately in tributes to the community's most distinguished member. Individuals honored in this way are depicted by a mask that is conceived of as their artistic double or namesake. The mask measures 17 x 7 inches. A metal display stand can also be included for an additional $50.00. Baule peoples, Ivory Coast, Africa. Provenance: Ex Frank Friedman collection late 1990's, New York.
Condition
Fair, deep well handled surface patina, obvious field use.
