Description
Buffalo Bill and Pawnee Bill signed Book by Frank Winch. At one-time the best-paid performer in the land, Cody died penniless in 1917. During his lifetime and in the years since, he has had his share of debunkers and supporters. Cody’s real achievements and his glorious lies or embellishments have become as entangled as a semi-wild Longhorn in a barbed-wire fence. William Cody will remain standing on the hilltop waving a Medal of Honor in one hand and a Wild West poster in the other. “For generations of Americans and Europeans, Buffalo Bill defined the meaning of American history and American identity. From California to Maine, and from Wales to Ukraine, crowds who came to see Buffalo Bill’s Wild West show spoke so widely and fervently about it for years afterward that it became a defining cultural memory, or dream, of America.” Gordon William Lillie (February 14, 1860 – February 3, 1942), known professionally as Pawnee Bill, was an American showman and performer who specialized in Wild West shows and was known for his short partnership with William "Buffalo" Bill Cody. In 2010, he was inducted into the Hall of Great Westerners of the National Cowboy & Western Heritage Museum. Pawnee Bill was born on February 14, 1860, in Bloomington, Illinois. By the age of 19, he was working on the Pawnee Indian agency in Indian Territory. In 1883, he was given the chance to work as the Pawnee interpreter with Buffalo Bill's Wild West Show. His work with the show was the origin of his nickname as "Pawnee Bill".
