Born in Narrows, Georgia in 1886, Tyrus Raymond “Ty” Cobb overcame family tragedy to forge one of the greatest careers in big-league baseball history. Nearly a century later, his stunning achievement of a record 12 batting titles with a .366 career average remains unmatched as does his reputation for fierce play and a terrible temper. Of the many firsts he achieved during his career, one of the most notable of his life was being voted into the Baseball Hall of Fame in the inaugural election of 1936 which he won by 222 out of 226 votes, a percentage record that stood until 1992.
