Description
Here is a fascinating find. Kataro Shirayamadani was an accomplished painter of porcelainware when he came to the United States. He worked in Boston for the Fujiyama porcelain decorating workshop when he first met Maria Longworth Nichols Storer, the founder of Rookwood Pottery, in 1886. She hired him to work for her at Rookwood in May, 1887. This hand painted porcelain charger is signed by Shirayamadani and is dated 1887, Boston, which would correspond with his tenure in Boston at Fujiyama shortly before being hired to work at Rookwood. The makers mark to the back of the charger dates it to the same time period. The charger measures 12" in diameter. It is in very good condition with no chips, cracks, or repairs. There is some slight wear to the gilding around the outer edges of the porcelain as shown in the photos.
