Roman, Imperial Period, ca. 2nd to 3rd century CE. A graceful, hand-blown double unguentarium of uniquely colored yellow glass, used by noblewomen at their toilettes. Flanked by a pair of trail handles, the translucent vessel is comprised of 2 cylindrical containers, laterally joined and topped with rolled rims. Wealthy women in ancient Rome would employ these pieces to contain their precious unguents and oils. Another use was as a double kohl vessel containing two colors of eye makeup. Vessels like this have also been found in tombs and were used to contain scented oils or precious cosmetics for the deceased to carry into the next world. Intact and excellent with weathering film to interior and lovely iridescence in areas. Pontil mark on underside of base. A pontil scar or mark indicates that a vessel was free-blown, while the absence of such a mark suggests that the work was either mold-blown or that the mark was intentionally smoothed away or wore away over time.
