Description
Ancient Central Asia, southern Azerbaijan and northern Iran, Ardabil region, Middle Bronze Age, ca. 2200 BCE. A fabulous tripod vessel comprised of a hemispherical bowl supported by impressively slender legs, all enveloped in an ash gray slip. The exterior surface is plain with raised concentric bands around the shoulder and 3 pierced lugs project from the sides for suspension or securing a lid. The interior basin is lightly etched with curvilinear or crosshatched patterning. It is not certain what this large tripod was used for – and either ritualistic or utilitarian, however it is possible this was used as a brazier or incense burner as it is similar in shape to basalt examples from the period. Size: 12.5" Diameter x 8.75" H (31.8 cm x 22.2 cm)
