Item Details
Description
East Asia, Japan, Meiji period, 19th to early 20th century CE. A turned wood hibachi brazier (possibly paulownia / kiri wood), finely carved into a cylindrical form with a smooth rounded rim and base, beautifully adorned with birds and foliage delineated with inlays of mother of pearl and copper. The interior bowl is made of copper to hold coals or charcoal for heating rooms as well as warming tea or sake. Although many English speakers may associate the word "hibachi" with the teppanyaki restaurant style of cooking on a open grill or stove, "hibachi" translates to brazier or fire bowl, and were traditionally used for heating or light cooking and could be quiet beautiful and decorative pieces - as demonstrated by this lovely example! Size: 14" Diameter x 8.5" H (35.6 cm x 21.6 cm)
