Description
1872 William Cullen Bryant The Fountain Illustrated Poetry Winslow Homer ART
William Cullen Bryant was an important and well-known 19th-century American poet known for his landmark work Thanatopsis. Many of Bryants works deal with human emotion such as sorrow and love; but also wrote works on war, peace, nature, lifestyle, and even adventure.
One of Bryants better-known works was his poem The Fountain. First published in 1839, The Fountain is a poem that was written, according to Satelmajer, at a time when Bryant was heavily involved in social and political events of his time. Satelmajer calls this poem a tale of progress ending with “a well-tuned moral lesson”. Clearly, Bryant was making claims about the gloomy state of America (particularly politically), hoping to bring to light the goodness that still existed, somewhere.
