Description
Sukhothai period monumental fragmentary stucco head of Buddha or Bodhisattva mounted on pedestal, circa 1450. Head: 23" H x 22" W x 23" D; overall: 80" H x 22" W x 23" D. Provenance: Property from a Ridgefield, CT estate. Reportedly recovered from the central sanctuary tower of the Wat Phrai Phai Luang (the 'Temple of The Great Wind' founded under Jayavarman VII) in Sukhothai, Thailand. Purchased from Tucker and Tozer, London. Reference: Hiram W. Woodware, The Sacred Sculpture of Thailand: The Alexander Griswold Collection, Baltimore: The Walters Art Gallery, 1997.
