Southeast Asia, Indonesia, Timor Island, Tetum, ca. early to mid-20th century CE. A fine spoon or ladle hand-carved from espresso-hued buffalo horn to feature a shallow, ovoid bowl and a perpendicular handle in the form of an anthropomorphic figure. Shown squatting, the stylized figure wears a long robe with a vertical, zigzag motif on the front. The forward-facing head bears a minimalist visage with a pair of pierced eyes crowned by a helmet-like coiffure. The verso of the area below the figure boasts an incised, geometric design. Size: 1.9" W x 3.3" H (4.8 cm x 8.4 cm); 4.8" H (12.2 cm) on included custom stand.
Provenance: ex-private Bishop Family Trust collection, the Trust of the late Bill Bishop, a noted antiquarian with shops in Scottsdale, Arizona and Allenspark, Colorado, USA, acquired before 2010
