The sale of this lot is final. Was a French painter who, along with Henri Matisse, co-founded the Fauvism movement. Born on June 10, 1880 in Chatou, France, Derain taught himself to paint at an early age and met Matisse in a class taught by the Symbolist artist Eugene Carriere. Derain and Matisse traveled together in the summer of 1905 to the Mediterranean village of Collioure, which had become an artist retreat for painters such as Pablo Picasso and Tsuguharu Foujita. Over the course of the summer, the two developed an innovative style of painting using bright, unnatural color schemes to depict realistic subjects. They exhibited their work later that year in Paris at the annual Salon d Automne, only to have critic Louis Vauxcelles derisively labeled the artists as les fauves, or wild beasts, thus marking the start of the Fauvist movement. Derain was awarded the Carnegie Prize in 1928 for his painting Still life with Dead Game, leading to widespread fame and a Western tour of his work in the late 1920s. Later in life, Derain distanced himself from Modern Art, adopting a more Classical approach in his work. He died on September 8, 1954 in Garches, France.
