Description

Standard issue Civil War canteen with original brown jean cloth cover marked “US” and 1864 patent date on its spout. On one side, written is the message “We drank from the same canteen, 1861-1865.”

This inscribed piece, almost certainly exhibited in a Grand Army of the Republic (GAR) hall, was likely produced by a Civil War veteran to remind fellow members of their shared experience and to inspire a spirit of camaraderie.
