Excellent condition framed ink on board sketch by Alfred R. Waud (1828-1891), artist correspondent.

Both scenes were recorded by Waud, who was present during the 1864 siege of Petersburg, VA. They are titled “Sharpshooters, 18th Corps Front, Siege of Petersburg,” and “Bivouac of the 5th corps in the rifle pits.” Piece is signed “A.R.W.” within the inset “Bivouac” illustration.

Two of the more iconic illustrations of every day soldier life within the late war trenches. Alfred R. Waud is perhaps the Civil War’s most well-known artist correspondent, contributing sketches that were often featured in editions of Harper’s Weekly. This represents a rare opportunity to obtain an original example. It is unknown where this particular example was published, but it was likely in the latter half of the 19th century.
