Description
Later life carte de visite (CDV) photograph of General Robert E, Lee as he looked during his term as president of Washington College (later Washington and Lee University). This portrait was produced to be used as the central medallion in a Washington College faculty composite.
In this view, the former commander of the Confederate Army looks older and more vulnerable than in examples struck before and during the conflict. Lee came to Lexington, where this photo was produced, in 1865 after accepting the presidency of Washington College. He lived in Lexington until his death in 1870.
Both the front and reverse of the CDV bear the name of the photographers, Boude & Miley, who operated the Stonewall Art Gallery in that city and capitalized on his fame. This tandem reproduced several Lee views for public consumption. This particular example is in good condition, and was tipped into a modern but appropriate mat for safe storage.
Rare example, we have no been able to locate a previous sale record of this view at auction.
[Civil War, Union, Confederate, Robert E. Lee, Ulysses S. Grant, U.S Grant, Abraham Lincoln] [Antique Photography, Daguerreotype, Ambrotype, Albumen, carte-de-visite, CDV, Tintype] [Civil War, Union, Confederate, Ulysses S. Grant, US Grant, Robert E. Lee, Abraham Lincoln]
