Item Details
Description
(2) Original 1865 documents relating to Samuel Mitchell, Co. A, 38th United States Colored Troops (USCT). Both documents relate to his discharge at the conclusion of his Civil War service - for which the documents indicate he was paid just over $65. Mitchell, listed as a “farmer” from North Carolina during his early 1864 enlistment, served for nearly two years with the 38th USCT, a regiment comprised primarily of runaway slaves and contrabands from Virginia and other nearby areas.

Three members of the 38th USCT received the Medal of Honor for their heroic service during the battle of Chaffin’s Farm. Mitchell survived unscathed.

Both documents are in fine condition. This is a nice archive related to a man who transitioned from slave to soldier during the Civil War.
