Description
1896 ECONOMICS 1ed Free Silver Gold Standard Life William J Bryan Arthur Sewall
A rare first edition the historical biography and political propaganda entitled, Life of William J. Bryan [and the] Life of Arthur Sewall. Written by Richard L. Metcalf in, this biographic work was distributed as US political propaganda for the 1896 Democratic presidential campaign of William Jennings Bryan and Arthur Sewall. Within Metcalf details the life and political careers of both running partners but primarily frames the text to speak to the premier political debate of the time concerning economic policy and the expansion of the US money supply via “free silver” versus adopting the “gold standard.”
At the turn of 19th-century the US was reeling from an economic depression known as the “Panic of 1893” that consequently pushed the subject to the front of US politics and is the root of the famous “Cross of Gold” speech given by Democratic presidential candidate, William Jennings Bryan. Following the 1896 elections, the US public would ultimately vote to adopt the gold standard.
