Item Details

Description

A two page manuscript legal document regarding the sale of a group of "negroes" slaves dated 1813. The sale was in dispute and this document addresses the concerns. Legal document concerning a slavery-related case between Joseph Lawrence and John Mark. Signed by Nelson on verso. Roger Nelson (1759-1815) enlisted in Col. William Washington's Dragoons. He was captured at Charleston and enlisted with the Maryland Line upon his exchange, where he saw action at the battles of Camden, Guilford Court House, and Cowpens. Nelson was wounded in action at Cowpens; while lying injured on the battlefield, a British officer struck Nelson's hand with the flat of his saber, breaking each of his fingers and permanently disabling his hand. After the war, he served as a Maryland representative in Congress from 1804 to 1810. Fine measures 8 x 13".
