Description
American Rococo Carved Rosewood Etagere Console, c. 1860, attr. to Alexander Roux, New York, scrolled architectonic crest centered by a lion's mask, latticework brackets, shaped shelves, serpentine top with conforming diaper pattern and floral frieze centered by a maiden bust, floral cabriole legs, scrolled stretcher centered by a large acanthus and cabochon medallion, h. 88 in., w. 78 in., d. 30 in. Provenance: The Schoenberger Collection, 1812 Palmer Avenue, New Orleans. Note: The stunningly carved etagere offered here is nearly identical in overall form, proportions, and decorative details as a labeled Alexander Roux etagere conserved in the collection of the Metropolitan Museum of Art (acc. 1971.219). Perhaps the most extravagantly carved examples of American Rococo furniture, Alexander Roux pieces feature sculptural naturalist elements such as animal masks and robustly modeled flowers and foliage, in addition to elements distinctive to Roux furniture like latticework and diamond motifs, as seen on the present lot. Ref.: “Etagere, c. 1855,” The Metropolitan Museum of Art. metmuseum.org/art/collection/search/3555.
