Wallachia, Danube and Novae Fortress in Svishtov.
Title: The Plains of lower Wallachia from the Castle of Sistova.
Engraver: James Charles Armytage ( c. 1802 – 1897)
Artist: after William Henry Bartlett (1809 – 1854).
Provenance: The Danube, Its History, Scenery, and Topography: Splendidly Illustrated, from Sketches Taken on the Spot by by William Beattie.
Production date: c. 1840
Image size: 11,6x18,2 cms.
Condition: some foxing on lower margin and light foxing on left part of the image.; Novae was initially one of the few great Roman legionary fortresses along the empire's border, forming part of the defences (limes Moesiae) along the Danube in northern Bulgaria. The settlement later expanded into a town in the Roman province of Moesia Inferior, later Moesia Secunda. It lies about 4 km east of the modern town of Svishtov.
