Isaac Maxwell (San Antonio, Texas), pair of copper hanging light fixtures, with rectangular frames, featuring punched bands, lattice decoration, both marked to interior
height 29 in. x width 10 in. x depth 10 in. / each overall
Provenance: an Olmos Park, Texas collection
The spectacle of intricately patterned silhouette lighting is a distinctive experience provided by Isaac Maxwells punched metal lighting. Softly diffused light beams through precise perforations, sending a pattern of light and shadow over the wall of a room, porch, or patio. This style of lighting originally came from Mexico in the form of paper or tin candle holders called luminarias. The method of puncturing tin to create patterns and designs dates back to the 1800s. Esteemed architect Isaac Maxwells Mexican-style punched metalwork can be seen in the Tower of Americas, the lobby of Frost Bank downtown, and the mid-century modern homes he designed, many of which are located in the Alamo Heights, Terrell Hills, and Olmos Park neighborhoods.
