Canadian. Late 19th century. Pencil drawing on paper. Graphite of habitant figure smoking a pipe and carrying two buckets. Many of Julien's subjects were used in publications about French-Canadian habitant life, folk customs and legends. Signed recto lower right "H. Julien". Embossed collection stamp to lower left. Excellent condition. From the Marty Osler Collection. Frame: 19" x 15". Drawing (sight): 9.5" x 5". Octave-Henri Julien (1858-1908) was a Québec-based lithographer, illustrator, caricaturist, and painter. During his lifetime, he was widely renowned in Québec, Canada and France. Early in his career, he created newspaper illustrations for three publications: the Canadian Illustrated News, L’Opinion publique, and Hearthstone. He also drew political cartoons and collaborated with newspapers such as Le Canard, Le Farceur, Le Franc Parleur, Le Grelot, Le Violon and Le Vrai Canard. He often signed his political cartoons under the pseudonyms 'Crincrin' and 'Octavo'. In 1888, Julien became the artistic director for the Montreal Daily Star and quickly became the most well-known newspaper illustrator in Canada. In addition to his newspaper drawings, Julien produced a number of renowned ethnological paintings and illustrations. These works greatly contributed to his national and international reputation. Julien's works have been exhibited in museums and art galleries around the world.
