size: 20 x 16; ASKart: Victor DePauw (Belgium 1902 - 1971 New York) was a prominent New York artist from the 1920's until his death. An Early American Modernist DePauw was best known as an Illustrator and Painter. DePauw was a member of the New York City/East Hampton "Art Colony" for over 50 years but is perhaps most popularly known for creating the unique brush drawing style (and 10 covers) for the "New Yorker" magazine.Born in Belgium, DePauw emigrated as a child to the Frazier River Valley of British Colombia in 1908, an area of wild rural mountain landscapes which appear frequently in his paintings. As a young man he served as a seaman on a Canadian minesweeper during World War I. Immediately following the war, he began his art career and from 1919 - 1922 studied at the California School of Fine Arts.In 1922 DePauw settled in New York studying at the Art Students League, New York City, where he later taught. During his years of study in New York, DePauw was known for newspaper portraits of prominent celebrities including Helen Hayes, Ethel Barrymore, Catherine Cornell, Clark Gable, James Cagney, Edward G.Robinson, Robert Sherwood, Eugene O'Neil, George Kaufman, Alexander Woolcott, Heywood Broun among others, for "The New York Times",and "Vanity Fair". When the "New Yorker" launched in 1924, DePauw contributed cover art, setting the style for that magazine that remains today.DePauw's first solo show was at the Leonard Clayton Gallery in 1935 and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts among many others. DePauw's works were collected by Mrs. Nelson Rockefeller and former ambassador Claire Booth Luce and Robert E. Sherwood, among others. He later taught at the Museum of Modern Art and is represented in the MOMA permanent collection
