Description
An Edwardian satinwood and ivory line-inlaid portable dressing table or necessaire on stand by Callow of Mount Street
the interior utensils variously hallmarked for 'Thomas Callow and Sons', 1906
The lockable box with a hinged top enclosing a complete necessaire set comprised of rose quartz mounted and silver gilt utensils, the underside of the top enclosing a removable catch-activated bevelled glass toilet mirror with a hinged stand to the reverse, the hinged fall front enclosing one compartmented long drawer above two secret catch-activated and spring-loaded short drawers, on a stand with a secret catch-activated and spring-loaded frieze drawer, on square section legs with splayed feet, with an X-stretcher centred by a turned boss, variously engraved or signed: 'CALLOW OF MOUNT STREET, PARK LANE' and 'CALLOW OF MOUNT STREET, W.', 31cm wide x 30cm deep x 81cm high, (12in wide x 11 1/2in deep x 31 1/2in high)
Footnotes:
The silversmith Thomas Callow established his own firm in 1841 and by 1852 the business was called 'Thomas Callow and Son'. It remained in operation with this name until being changed in 1925 to 'Oscar Callow'. Although evidently, it was also referred to more generally at the turn of the century as 'Callow of Mount Street'. The company is recorded as being based at 16 Mount Street, in W.1., during the period 1913-1918 but it seems logical to presume that they were also based at this address prior to 1913.
The item within this lot containing ivory has been registered in accordance with the Ivory Act (Section 10). Ref YCZDEL3Y
