"A Horse's Tale", by Mark Twain, illustrated by Lucius Hitchcock, published by Harper, New York and London, First Edition, special printing for the Oil City Trust Company, December 1908 on the title page. "Published October, 1907" without any other additional imprints on the copyright page. References: BAL 3500; McBride p. 232.
Hard cover, original pictorial cloth (some soiling, fade, spine ends and corner wear: see photos); name "Jesse ??? Grigsby / Norman Okla" is ink written on the front endpaper, 5.1/2" x 8"; 153 pages; full page plates by Lucius Hitchcock, all 5 plates are present, some wear, 2 pages have c. 1-2" creases on top, small dark stain at the top edge of the pages [see photos]; good condition.

Told from the horse's point of view, this is the tale of Buffalo Bill's fictional favorite scout horse (Soldier Boy), who befriends an orphan girl whom he saves from wolves. He is stolen and ends up gored in a bullfight ring; she rushes to his side and is fatally gored herself.
Lucius Wolcott Hitchcock (1868-1942) was an American artist, illustrator and educator, known for his paintings.
