Description
"That liberty shall not perish from the Earth" is a quote from Abraham Lincoln's famous speech, "The Gettysburg Address". 54 years later, it is used in this dramatic WWI poster. The relationship between WWI and the Civil War was often used as a rallying cry. Depicted here is a dramatic, almost post-apocalyptic view of what New York Harbor might look like should it be bombed. The Statue of Liberty is in ruins, as German bombers fly above and the sky seems to be aflame. It is a bleak image, meant to startle onlookers into going out and purchasing Liberty Bonds to fund the War.Joseph Pennell (1857-1926) was born in Pennsylvania, and worked and studied in Europe for most of his career. He was a contemporary of James Whistler and William Morris. Pennell said of this poster design that it, "must appeal to the people-the people gorged with comics, and stuffed with movies, and fattened on photographs."This is an Original Vintage Poster; it is not a reproduction. This poster is conservation mounted, linen backed, and in excellent condition. We guarantee the authenticity of all of our posters
