Description
Signed Martha Raye by Maurice Seymour Portrait - This stunning black-and-white portrait is hand-signed by legendary film and Broadway actress Martha Raye. This portrait was captured by Maurice Seymour, the renowned Russian photographer who immigrated to the United States in the 1920s and proceeded to distinguish himself as the most-sought after photographer for celebrities. The signature on this photograph is addressed to a Dominic Ferro, with a personal message that seems to convey a hidden joke shared between the actress and Ferro. Born Margy Reed in Butte, Montana in 1916, Martha Raye was signed to Paramount Pictures in 1936 for a series of comedic roles in motion pictures. She starred in Rhythm On The Range alongside Bing Crosby, and gained further notoriety starring on Broadway in productions like Hello, Dolly! and No, No, Nanette. She was also one of the first television stars in history, starring in the self-titled Martha Raye Show from 1954-1956 alongside Rocky Graziano, the retired middleweight boxing champion. A strong political activist, she contributed to the World War II war efforts through her work with the USO, and upon her passing at the age of 78 in 1994, she was buried with full military honors. This framed lot measures approximately 13 in x 10 in.
