Made by John Harper & Company. Great Britain - Circa 1897. Purchased from John Haley. Harper's Hoop-La Bank is an obvious ripoff of Shepard Hardware's earlier design for a hoop-jumping canine. However, they have made several noteworthy changes. The clown, with his three part hairdo and his giant ruffled collar , is shown more in the fashion of the European clown. He's a lot more solid and sturdy than his American cast iron counterpart. The dog crouches lower to the ground, building up the power in his legs to more convincingly jump through the clown's hoop. All in all, these are delightful changes that greatly add to the appeal of this rare toy bank.
