Description
This lot includes a carved and polychrome painted cigar store Indian. Some refer to it as a trade sign. We are excited to have two in this sale. Both of these came from the same estate. The consignor's father did most of his purchases at auction. He mostly bought at Conestoga Auction, Kleinfelter's Auction, and on occasion the original Pennypacker's Auction. These have been in the same home and not offered for sale anywhere in the last 40 to 50 years. We found one on the back porch and the other in the attic. The paint appears to be original. there is loss, chips, fading, cracks to the paint and to the piece. The paint appears to be original, but there is possibly some touch ups. Overall the piece is solid. Originally we attributed this to being in the style of The Shop of Samuel Robb, but after further research we now are leaning towards it being in the style of The Shop of Thomas Brooks, NY but we welcome your thoughts. His left foot raised on a plinth. His left hand also raised in gesture. His right hand holds a bundle of cigars. His head is topped with a large feather head dress. The head dress on this figure is larger and more ornate than the one on lot # 421A. The carvings are strong, detailed and show well, the age is unknown to us due to the possible replacement of the bases of the trade signs. Measures approx. 72"h x 19"l x 14.5"w.
