Description
Jose Formoso Reyes.Massachusetts, Philippines,1902-1980
Tightly woven basket with carved bone seagull detailing, closure, and single finely carved wood handle. Reyes received a BA from Reed College and later went on to Harvard where he received his M.Ed. He returned to his native country, Philippines, wherehe was employed at the Philippine Military Academy and later became head of the Department of Languages and Social Arts. In 1941 he joined the US army, and after the Philippines liberation, returned to America. Unable to find a teaching position, he utilized basket weaving skills from the Philippines and from his friend Mitchell Ray who showed him the art of Nantucket Lightship baskets, creating the iconic Nantucket baskets.
