BIOGRAPHY:
Paul Proehl studied architecture at the University of Illinois (1907-1910), after which he worked as a draftsman and designer for many buildings in Chicago. Attending Chicago art schools, Proehl became an advertising artist beginning around 1918. In 1924, Proehl became a partner at Palenske Young, a well-known Chicago illustration studio located on North Michigan Ave. From that point on, Proehl'sillustrations appeared in national magazines for over thirty years.During 1938-52, he created art for annual calendars and dining car menus used by the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad. He also created images for the Illinois Central Railroad, and for Chicago's "A Century of Progress" exhibition in 1933-34. His impact on the Chicago illustration scene was great, especially at a time when railroad art was in its heyday, and railroad companies were known to hire the best illustrators available.Examples of Proehl's art for the Chicago & Northwestern Railroad are reproduced in the Spring 1995 issue of "North Western Lines," the official publication of the Chicago & North Western Historical Society.Well established and from Chicago, it is no surprise that Proehl's work came to the attention of Frank Cash, the Chicago public relations and advertising executive responsible for the Mountie ad campaign.Proehl moved to California in 1948, and worked as a sketch artist for two years with R.K.O and Columbia motion picture studios.
