Description
Thomas Jefferson and James Madison Scallop Top Ship's Passport Signed. One partially printed page of vellum, 10" x 15" (sight), Port of New York; February 19, 1805. Mediterranean ship's passport, numbered 53, issued to the "Ship West Point of New York," captained by Judah Paddock and crewed with fifteen men. It authorized the ship, which had "the burthen of Three Hundred sixteen &79/95 tons or thereabouts... to pass with her Company, Passengers, Goods, and Merchandize, without any hinderance, seizure of molestation..." Signed by Jefferson as president, "Th: Jefferson". Countersigned by James Madison as secretary of state. With maritime vignettes and a blind-embossed paper seal affixed at the lower-left corner. The passport has been handsomely matted and framed to the overall size of 15" x 20". A typed transcription of an August 27, 1796 circular by Secretary of State T[homas] Pickering to the collector of the port of New York is affixed on the verso of the frame. Not examined outside of the frame. Condition: Light wrinkling and curling. Fold crosses one letter of Madison's signature. Small dampstain at bottom right margin.
