Pre-Columbian, West Mexico, Chupicuaro, ca. 500 to 300 BCE. A hand-built and highly burnished brownware pottery jar of sizable form with a round but stable base, a tapered body, and a thick rim. Some lightened or fire-darkened areas of the exterior nicely complement the overall dark-brown color. Size: 6.75" W x 8.6" H (17.1 cm x 21.8 cm)
Provenance: private California collection, USA, by descent; ex- Alfred E. Stendahl collection, Stendahl Gallery, Los Angeles, California, USA, acquired prior to 1990

Condition
Repair to area of rim and upper shoulder, with small chips and light adhesive residue along break lines. Abrasions, nicks, and chips commensurate with age, with areas of fire-darkening and fading to pigment. Nice surface smoothness throughout. Modern felt pads beneath base for stabilization.
