Impressionist-style oil on canvas painting of Paris, unframed, signed lower right. Charles Blondin was a French impressionist painter and printmaker known for his depictions of Paris during different seasons. Born in 1913 in France his most active period dates from c. 1928 to the early 1950s. The Paris Etching Society and the Camilla Lucas Gallery (later the Phyllis Lucas Gallery) published a colorful series of color etchings by Blondin of iconic views of Paris. Little is known about Blondin's birth name. References to him usually assert that, although his birth name is unknown, that he changed it to Charles Blondin after Jean-François Gravelet dit Blondin (1824-1897), the then world famous funambulist (tightrope walker) and the first of his profession to walk across Niagara Falls. The paucity of facts about the artist Charles Blondin's birth name and early life raise the question of whether or not been he might have been one the eight children (including several born out of wedlock) mentioned in biographies of Jean-François Gravelet.
