John Young State Contract Musket for Delaware,
Easton, Pennsylvania, c. 1810-11.
44 7/16 in., .71 caliber round barrel, the left side of the breech marked 'P' and eagle head over 'CT' within a sunken oval cartouche; flat lock with pointed tail marked 'IY' and with a spread wing eagle over 'US' below the rounded and integrally forged pan, the inside of the plate marked 'H'; walnut stock stamped 'WESTPHAL' on the left side behind the side plate, 'IY' below the trigger guard and branded 'DELAWARE' on the right side of the butt; iron furniture of proper form, sling swivels and steel rammer with flaring head and threaded end.

In 1812 John Joseph Henry purchased more than 1,900 muskets from a variety of musket contractors and merchants that were later sold for privateer or militia use. Henry's records record that in 1812 muskets were delivered to the State of Delaware from various contractors including sixty-four from John Young (George D. Moller, American Military Shoulder Arms, Vol. II From the 1790s to the End of the Flintlock Period, (Niwot: University Press of Colorado, 1993), p. 200).

Condition
Iron has scattered light gray mottling with very fine associated pitting; lock functions properly, one side nail is replaced; stock has old surface, scattered dings and dents, small areas of wood repair around the lock mortice, sliver of wood loss to the left of the breech plug tang, and small chip loss on the bottom adjacent to the butt plate.
