From conservator, Margaret Jayne Rosen, "The Portrait of 'Dovie' by Howard Chandler Christy is a beautifully painted portrait by an accomplished portrait painter, one of the finer portrait painters of his generation. His ability to capture her regal personality is evidenced by his confident brush strokes, and use of color in the background areas to enhance her porcelain skin tones, and her lovely eyes which convey a sense of confidence and stateliness. The large portrait was very fragile, but has been resupported onto new canvas with a micro-crystalline vinyl resin to reattach the torn areas, and stop the painting from continuing to decay. The yellowed varnish and dirt were removed, and the losses were filled with an acrylic gesso and retouched with an acrylic medium.
The painting was put onto a new stretcher with an added cross brace for additional support. The painting was then varnished, and reframed into its original frame."
