A little history:
Until the turn of the 20th Century, perfume was an expensive luxury only the rich could afford. So, too, was glass. Women bought their perfume in plain vials and decanted them into expensive perfume bottles, frequently made from a variety of semi-precious materials. The arrival of the 20th Century not only made perfume production techniques more affordable, but brought the possibility of, and demand for, a new range of perfume bottles.
Sabino glass was founded in the early 1920s in Paris, France by Marius-Ernest Sabino. Sabino was born in in Sicily during the late 1800s but moved to France as a child. Sabino went on to study at L’Ecole Nationale des Arts Decoratifs and the Beaux Arts de Paris where he garnered great interest in the challenges that faced glass manufacturers with the advent of electricity. Indeed, it was through electric lighting that Sabino came to glass production. Upon his return from WWI, Sabino founded a factory that specialized in light fittings made of wood or bronze before turning to glass. Sabino recognized the advantages of new techniques that made it possible to create molds for glass. With Sabino’s new found skills he was able to produce precise and imaginative designs.
By 1925 Sabino had perfected his own chemical formula that produced an opalescent glass with a iridescent blue hue that mimicked aspects of the natural world. His glass pieces were unlike anything else at the time. In low light the pieces appeared bluish—as if imitating light bouncing off water. In brighter light the pieces appeared almost golden, similar to the sun reflecting off a glacier. These otherworldly glass objects soon gained attention in Europe and became highly sought after. To this day his opalescent glass pieces remain an emblem of the Art Nouveau aesthetic.
