Biography: Peter Alexander is a contemporary American sculptor who was a part of the Light and Space movement along with Robert Irwin and Larry Bell during the 1960s. His best known works are sculptures constructed from translucent plastic and resin, which respond to the light of the spaces in which they are shown. “I’m a romantic, and I believe in it. I believe in the value of things,” the artist has said. “I believe that objects can be made that can have an extraordinary effect on me and others.” Born on February 27, 1939 in Los Angeles, CA, he studied architecture in England before receiving both his BFA and MFA from the University of California, Los Angeles. Alexander started as an architect, before developing a reputation in the 1960s for creating his sculptures. More recently, he has shown himself to be a prolific painter, with many of his paintings depicting the landscape and night skyline of Los Angeles. Alexander currently lives and works in Santa Monica, CA. The artist’s works are held in the collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum in Los Angeles, The Museum of Modern Art in New York, and the Walker Art Center in Minneapolis.
